1. Version History

0.8 (June 13 2003) - First version of Darxtorm's beginners guide out!
Chapters 8-10 coming after i get home from my vacation :).

2. Introduction

Welcome to the world of Runescape! You will find that, according to a lot of
the population of runescape, your name is "n00b". So that is what i shall
call you. Runescape may seem overwhelming at a first glance, even to
an experienced MMORPGer. A huge world, lots of non-combat skills. Hell, it
is possible to max out all non-combat skills without getting a combat level!
But that is not something you should try if you are new to runescape.

Since you are reading my guide, I am assuming that you are a newbie, mr n00b.

2.a Layout

This guide is a step-by-step guide, and I suggest you follow it that way.
At the end of each step, i will summarize what you have gotten so far, so
you can easily keep track of your progress. Anyway, on to the next chapter.

3. Notes

Not much to say here... I have one important thing to say though. Things
may change when Runescape gets updated, so this guide may not be 100%
accurate.

4. Character creation

So you downloaded the windows client? If not i suggest you do it, because
running from the windows client makes Runescape less laggy. It can be
gotten off www.runescape.com.

If you have it, go ahead and hit play game, followed by free game (you can
of course become a member, but you need to upgrade an existing account. I
also suggest you gain some experience before getting members). Choose a
server (preferably one close to you), wait for the game to load, and press
New User. Choose a name and a password (i will still call you n00b =p).

Great! Now you get to choose what you want to look like in the game!
Woohoo! Do so and hit ok...

5. Tutorial Island

Welcome to Runescape, n00b! This is the tutorial island. Read and close
the pop-up window that greeted you, and talk to the Guide. Ask about more
information and controls, then right click the door and choose open.

In this room there is a controls guide, who tells you how to navigate in
Runescape. Talk to him. When finished, open the next door and go outside.

There is a combat instructor here, talk to him. He will give you a weapon
and a shield. Equip them (he told you how to do that) and speak to him
again. When done, attack a level 7 rat. During combat, you can choose
fighting style. This determines how you fight and what skill gets
experience after the fight. The skill next to the style tells you what
skill that gets exp, and the number next to the skill tells you how many
levels you will temporarily get in that skill during the fight. Now, go
inside the next building.

It is time to try out cooking! Exciting, eh? Speak with the cooking
instructor, he will give you a raw meat. Use it on a range. You will burn
it, but don't worry. Talk to the cooking instructor again, he will give
you a new meat. This time you won't fail. If you want to, you can eat the
cooked meat to heal some hit points. Talk to the instructor again, then go
into the next room to the financial advisor.

Talk to the financial advisor, then step outside.

Talk to the fishing instructor by the sea, he will give you a net. Click
on the fishing spot in the sea until you catch some shrimp, then talk to
the fishing instructor again. STOP! It is time to level some skills. Cook
the shrimp on the fire (don't worry if you burn it). Keep fishing and
cooking shrimp until you are at least level 10 fishing and have gained
some cooking levels (how many cooking levels you get depends on how many
shrimp you burn). Eat the shrimp after cooking it. Each shrimp gives 10
fishing and 30 cooking experience. If you think this is time consuming,
then just wait until you need 200,000 experience to get one level...
When done here, go through the door to the mining instructor.

Talk to the dwarf in leather armor by the rock. This is the mining instructor.
He will tell you about mining and tell you to prospect the rock. Prospect it.
You will find tin in it. Now talk to the instructor again. He will give you a
bronze pickaxe and tell you to mine the rock, so click the rock for some tin
ore. You are done here, so go to the next room.

Talk to the bank instructor to learn about banking. Deposit the following
items: Bronze axe, tinderbox, bronze pickaxe, net. Drop the burnt meat, any
burnt shrimp if you have that, and the tin ore. These only take up space in
your inventory. Keep the bronze long sword, wooden shield and cookedmeats in
your inventory, and move on to the next room.

Speak with the quest advisor, who will tell you about quests. Go outside.

Speak with the wilderness instructor about the wilderness and PKing (player
killing). It doesn't really matter what you tell him. Go into the next room.

This is the magic instructor. Talk to him, and tell him to teach you about
magic. Check the magic menu as he told you and speak to him again. He will
give you some runes. Check your magic list again, and whoa! Wind strike is
yellow! That means you can cast the spell! Talk to the magic instructor
yet again, then cast wind strike that chicken to death. You will probably
fail casting the spell a lot of times, but don't worry just try again.
When done, you can keep the runes in your inventory, bank them, or drop
them. I suggest banking them or dropping them though. Go to the next room.

Speak to the fatigue instructor about the relatively new fatigue system and
follow his instructions. You will recieve a sleeping bag. Keep this in your
inventory. Now step outside.

Speak with the community instructor and move on.

Ah, the last part of the tutorial island, mr n00b. Speak with the boatman to
go to the mainland of Runescape!

By now you should have:
- Completed the tutorial.
- Level 10 fishing.
- Decent cooking.
- Some but not all of the items given to you on tutorial island.

6. Your first steps on the mainland

Welcome to Lumbridge n00b. You can see that there are a lot of people here.
Most of these have recently departed from tutorial island, just like you.
Lumbridge has a general store where you can sell your goods, a castle where
the duke of Lumbridge resides, a church of Saradomin, the good of the three
gods, Bob's Axes, where you can buy hatchets and battle axes, a sheep pen,
chickens, cows, goblins to train on and much more!

You can start 3 quests in Lumbridge, Sheep Shearer, Cook's Assistant and
Restless Ghost. I suggest we do that right away, since they are the
easiest quests in the game. Always remember to bring your sleeping bag!

6.a Questing

Let's start with the sheep shearer quest shall we? Go north from your starting
point, past the bridge, and follow the road west. You should come across a
chicken pen on the south side of the road. Talk to farmer Fred inside the
house, he will tell you that his sheep are getting very wooly and asks you to
shear them for him, and bring him 20 balls of wool. Now, equip your sword and
shield and go kill a goblin. Pick up what he drops, and go to the general
store. It is the two story house located just a few feet north of the starting
point. Talk to the shopkeeper/shop assistant and ask what they have for sale.
Look for the item that the goblin dropped and highlight it by clicking on it.
If it is sellable for GP (coins), then click the sell button at the bottom of
the store window. If it is not, go and kill goblins until you get something
that is sellable. NOTE: Goblins sometimes drop bronze square shields. If it
drops this, sell your wooden shield instead, and equip the new shield. It
gives more armor. Anyway, now that you have some GP, highlight the red item
that looks like scissors. This is shears. Hit the buy button at the bottom of
the window to buy these. By now you have probably noticed that there is a big
sheep pen in Lumbridge. Go inside it and start using your shears on the sheep.
They will run away some times, but don't worry. Keep trying until you get
wool. When you have 20 items of wool, go out of the sheep pen and follow the
road south into the town. You will see a castle and a castle yard. Go inside
the castle and head up 2 ladders in the southernmost tower. There is a mind
rune respawn on a table by the first ladder, if you want to get one or two.
Anyway, when you are at the top of the tower, use all 20 items of wool on the
spinning wheel. Every item of wool you spin gives you 3 crafting expereince.
When you are done spinning and have 20 balls of wool, take them back to
farmer Freds house to claim your reward; 1 quest point, 60 GP and some
crafting experience (this will probably get you a few crafting levels).

On to the next quest, cooks assistant. This is also a very easy quest. Go
inside Lumbridge castle, and talk to the cook on the first floor. He is in
a terrible mess! He is supposed to bake the duke a cake for his brithday,
but he doesn't have the ingredients and asks you to fetch them for him. Say
yes (obviously =p). He needs an egg, a bucket of milk, and a pot of flour.
Go outside the castle to the road, and follow it north. Cross the bridge
just before the road turns west. Continue north to another chicken pen. In
this pen there are 2 egg spawns and a bucket spawn. Pick up one egg and one
bucket. Now, cross the road and step inside the cow pen. Use the bucket on
a cow to fill it with milk. One item left to get. Get 1 gp (see sheep
shearer guide if you don't know how to get it), go to the Lumbridge general
store, and buy 1 pot, or head back to the cook where there should be a pot
spawn. When you have a pot, go north past the bridge you just crossed, then
west. Follow the road until you get to a wheat field. Right click some wheat
and choose pick. Go inside the nearby windmill that is just north of the road,
and climb the ladders to the third floor. Use the grain on the hopper, then
operate the hopper. Go back to the first floor, you should see some flour.
Use your pot on the flour. Great, you have all ingredients, so head back to
the cook and talk to him for your reward, 1 quest point, cooking experience
and the ability to use the range in the castle.

By now you should have:
- 2 quest points.
- Some GP.
- Good knowledge of Lumbridge and its northern and northeastern surroundings.

7. Training

Training is a very important aspect in Runescape. If you are somewhat strong,
you will find the game to be easier to play! Even though it is, like stated,
possible to make an über-char that is still combat level 3, i suggest you
gain some combat levels, since you are new to this game.

In the early stages, goblins are good to train on. There is a fair amount of
goblins, they are weak and easy to kill, and they drop good loot for newbies.
So we shall be training on goblins. As you may have noticed, there are lots
of goblins roaming in and around Lumbridge. Good goblin spots are on the east
side of the Lumbridge river and in the forest on Lumbridge's west side. Choose
wichever you prefer. You should have learned how to fight on tutorial island,
but just in case you have forgotten, click on a monster (goblin in this case)
to attack it. In the early stages, it is good to have your combat stats
balanced, so fight either on Controlled to even out the experience between the
three stats, or level one stat at a time. Don't worry about hits, it always
gets 1/4th of the monsters experience. For a more detailed explanation, let's
say you kill a monster that gives 100 experience total. 25 of that goes to
hits, and depending on what fighting style you killed it with, a combat stat
or is evenly spread out among the three stats if you fought on controlled.
So if you fought on controlled, all three stats would get 25 experience, while
if you fought on, let's say agressive, strength gets 75 experience while attack
and defense get 0 experience. Confusing eh?

Anyway, i suggest you fight goblins until you have 15 attack, defense and
strength. Your combat level will be between 15 and 20. Once you get a full
load of loot, go back to the general store and sell it. If your hits go below
5, i suggest you stop fighting for a while and let your hits slowly regenerate.
If you kill monsters when you have 100% fatigue, you will not get any exp, so
rest regularily. DON'T sell the bones that the goblins drop though. You can
bury them for prayer experience. Prayers are useful, to see what prayers are
available, highlight the book icon, and click the prayer button just below it
on the menu that appears. If you use prayers, your prayer points will slowly
decrease, and once they reach zero you cannot use prayers. You will have to
go to an altar to recharge your prayer points. Altars are mostly found in
churches. Don't sell any runes that you may get, save them instead.

When you are finally done training, you should be able to take on most
monsters up to level 30. You can now easily kill those annoing level 13
highwaymen that appear in two places, one northwest of Lumbridge and one
south of the city Falador. You can also kill level 19 skeletons easily, wich
brings us to our next point. It is time for another quest! It is time to rid
the Lumbridge cemetary from a Restless Ghost...

Go back into Lumbridge, and into the church. It is located opposite the
castle. Talk to the priest and ask him about a quest. He will tell you to
see father Urhney who lives in the swamps south of Lumbridge. Go to the forest
west of Lumbridge, and head south to a wall. Follow this wall west, until it
stops. Go around the wall, and head to the southeast corner of the swamp.
Father Urhney is in a small house here meditating. Talk to him, and tell him
that the priest sent you. He will give you an amulet of ghostspeak. Go back to
the church, and go to the cemetary behind it. Equip the amulet and talk to the
ghost. Ask why he does not get any rest. He will explain that his skull is
missing, and that he believes it is in a tower to the west. This is the
wizards tower. Go to Lumbridge forest and follow the path west, you should
encounter a road. On the west side of this road is Draynor Village. The
southernmost building is a bank, go inside and talk to a banker. Deposit any
valuables, except for your weapon and armor. Go back onto the road and follow
it south. Cross the bridge, and step inside the wizards tower. Go down the
ladder to the basement. You should see a skull on the floor with a lost
chicken nearby. Kill the chicken if you want to, then pick up the skull.
A level 19 skeleton will appear and attack you, and if you followed my
instructions, you should have no problems killing this monster. Once you
killed the skeleton, make sure the skull is in your inventory, and go back
to the cemetary. Open the coffin in the house here and use the skull on it.
You have completed the restless ghost quest! You are rewarded with 1 quest
point, and some prayer experience. That concludes this chapter.

By now you should have:
- A combat level in the 20s. Train some more if you don't have it.
- Completed the Restless Ghost quest.
- Some GP and runes.
- Dropped the amulet of ghostspeak, since it is totally useless.

8. Your first riches

This section will go more in-depth in the non-combat skills and tell you how
to make money off them.
